March Feature: The Polar Bear

Polar bears live in and around the Arctic, preferring to stay close to the sea. They are part of the order Carnivora and tend to hunt ringed and bearded seals. Male polar bears (boars) grow two to three times the size of female polar bears (sows). Boars weigh about 350 to more than 650 kg and are about 2.5 to 3.0 meters long. Polar bears generally live 15 to 18 years, though they have been known to live up to 30 years. There are approximately 40,000 polar bears in existence, threatened mostly by starvation and global warming, caused in great deal by human contamination of their environment.
